There were an estimated 406,766 small businesses in Wisconsin in 2004. Of the 125,888 firms with employees, an estimated 98 percent, or 123,349, were small firms.  These small employers accounted for 53.4% of the state's private-sector employment in 2006.  Overall, this is 98.0% of the employers in the state.  Small businesses serve as the backbone of Wisconsin's Main Streets.  Nationally, the entrepreneurs and innovators involved in small business created 78.9% of the nation's net new jobs from 2004 to 2005, and they generated more than half of the private non-farm gross domestic product.
